Bochum and LPI

U.S. Junior Paddlers Represent U.S. Proudly at Regattas Lake Placid and Bochum, Germany Host International Races

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Sunny skies and the Adirondack Mountains provided the backdrop for the head to head competition between Team USA and Team Canada, as part of the 2010 Lake Placid International (LPI) regatta.

After two years of Canadian dominance, the United States prevailed on Mirror Lake, July 2-4, to hoist the Grand Prix Trophy."It is great to see all the programs that have been put into place coming to fruition with such encouraging results at the LPI,” said Chris Barlow, Team USA Assistant Coach. “I know the USA still has a long way to go but we are well on the way to restoring the USA as a premier sprint canoe/kayak nation.”

The regatta drew 300 paddlers from all over the United States and Canada, with 34 athletes drawn from the USA Canoe/Kayak National Junior and Developmental teams to represent the U.S. The event followed a two-week training camp for the Americans at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.

"Congratulations... It shows that canoe/kayak is getting stronger in the U.S., and importantly, in North America," said Peter Niedre, National Coaching Education Director of Canoe Kayak Canada.

Bochum, Germany hosted the 58th Bochum International Regatta, June 18-20, with 23 countries and clubs competing. Shaun Caven, Head Coach of the Bochum Tour, led Team USA to seven finals appearances and four podium finishes.Cedric Bond and Ryan Stock won the U23 K2 500m race. Clare Kim and Bailey Nurmia took silver and bronze, respectively. in the U16 K1 200m competition. Tatjana Perrin and Clare Kim combined to earn the bronze medal in the U16 K2 500m race.Stanton Collins finished fourth in the U16 K1 1000m, missing the podium by 12 one-hundredths of a second. Shawn Kahookele and Hezekiah Blackburn finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the U18 K1 200m Final B."Our athletes gained confidence each day, with their best performances coming on Day 3 with the 200m events,” said Mac Hickox, USA Canoe/Kayak National Sprint Development Director. “These were modest results in a strong international regatta.”

Members of U.S. Junior National Team: Bailey Nurmia, Clare Kim, Mia Overton - Seattle, Wash. (Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club); Katy Hill - Seattle, Wash. (Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Club); Stanton Collins, Hezekiah Blackburn – Gainesville, Georgia (Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club); Tatjana Perrin, Shawn Kahookele - Honolulu, Hawaii (Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Club).Ryan Stock (San Diego Canoe and Kayak Team) and Cedric Bond (Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Club) are competing with the Under 23 Team for USA Canoe/Kayak.

USA Canoe/Kayak is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Canoe Federation. 2014 Marathon World Championships in OKC

Oklahoma City Awarded 2014 Canoe Marathon World Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY – June 24, 2010 The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has announced it
will award the 2014 Canoe Marathon World Championships to Oklahoma City, Okla. This will be the first World Championship event on the Oklahoma River and the first Canoe Marathon World Championship to be held in the USA.

“This event is a favorite with spectators in Europe since you can see the action right in
front of you as the paddlers lap the race course and hop out to portage their boats,” said
Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation Executive Director Mike Knopp. “To have an event coming to Oklahoma City that will be hosted in Rome and Copenhagen in the years leading up to the Oklahoma River race truly underscores the remarkable success we are having with the
development of the Oklahoma River. And, it’s exciting for us to be able to bring a race that’s so
popular in Europe and introduce it to a new audience here in America.”

The event is awarded on a competitive process with cities around the world vying for it. It
has been awarded to Rome, Italy, in 2012 and Copenhagen, Denmark in 2013.
Canoe Marathon is a flat-water long distance race that includes portions of the race
where athletes carry or “portage” their kayaks over land. The race is 20 kilometers for men and
15 kilometers for women with athletes making several laps on a course to cover the distance.
Canoe Marathon World Championships are held annually and attract athletes in the junior, under 23, senior and master categories. The 2014 event will take place Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28 on the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City.
"Hosting the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championship in Oklahoma City is a great
honor,” said Shaun Caven, Oklahoma City National High Performance Center head canoe/kayak. “This will be the first time the event will be held in the USA, proving that the vision of the city leaders has correct – build it and they will come.”

Approximately 300 athletes will travel from around the world to Oklahoma City to
compete at the event, bringing with them their coaches and families for the four-day event.
The Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation submitted a bid on behalf of the city for the
event in March of this year, with Knopp traveling to Budapest, Hungary in April to present the
City’s bid to the ICF Board of Directors. Jorn Cronbereg, the Danish Chairman of the ICF
Marathon Canoe Committee and ICF Official Rutgerus Pieter Heijselaar toured the Boathouse
District venue and race course May 27-30, after which they recommended the ICF Marathon
Committee award the 2014 event to Oklahoma City.

“We are thrilled that the Canoe Marathon Committee will get to experience the best
paddle sports has to offer through Oklahoma City,” said Joe Jacobi, USA Canoe/Kayak executive director. “USA Canoe/Kayak always looks to Oklahoma City to raise the standard of competitive paddle sports. Now the international paddling community will get to experience why this city is our paddle sports capital of the USA.”

Stroud House Renovations Begin

The "Stroud House" is painted green to match the Route 66 Boathouse.
Future plans for phase one improvements include a new roof, bay door, interior paint, and floor improvements.

The "Stroud House" will serve as the storage facility for Riversport rowing programs at the Lake Overholser area. The "Stroud House" is named in honor of Bob Stroud, the man responsible for introducing rowing to Oklahoma City in the late 70s. The Stroud House was built to house the Oklahoma City Rowing Club. Located across the North Canadian River from the Route 66 Boathouse, the Stroud House will be renovated over the never several months and will help continue the development of the Lake Overholser area as a beautiful water sports destination. New Finish Line Tower

Chesapeake Finish Line Tower Update

Mobilization and construction of the one-of-a-kind Chesapeake Finish Line Tower will begin next week. This structure will cantilever over the river bank and will meet all international rowing and canoe/kayak specifications.

The tower will feature four levels:
Level 1 - a gathering spot for river users and visitors for great viewing of waterfront activity, surfing the internet, and socializing (it will offer a place to purchase refreshments/coffee and information about the river activities) and will serve as an administration area during events;
Level 2 - Judges and officials floor with tiered judge seating, timing, and camera equipment;
Level 3 - Media and commentating level that will be available for meeting throughout the year;
Level 4 - Sky Suite for special events and premier river event viewing; Levels 1, 2, and 4 will feature balconies (Level 4 to be a full balcony facing the river). All levels will have catering functions and restrooms and will offer spectacular views of downtown.

The outdoor ground level of the tower will continue to emphasize the facility's function as a gathering spot, featuring terraced seating, a fire pit, and a screen on the side of the tower for viewing information and highlights during events, and movies during special evening programs at the river throughout the summer months. LED lights will symbolize the finish line with a large vertical light on the south side of the tower, and small lights in the sidewalks leading to the tower. Additional LED lights installed in the tower will light up as boats cross the finish line during events. The LED lights will complement other lighting features of the new boathouses, Lincoln Bridge, and future river projects. The Chesapeake Finish Line Tower is sure to become an iconic Oklahoma City landmark and will be the premier facility of its kind in the world. The tower is expected to open March, 2011.
